PEGZOR

1. What PEGZOR is and what it is used for

PEGZOR contains Polyethylene Glycol 4000, which belongs to a group of medicines called osmotic laxatives.

It works by drawing water into the stool, making it softer and easier to pass. This helps to relieve constipation.

PEGZOR is used for the treatment of constipation in adults and children.

The effect usually occurs within 24 to 48 hours.

Treatment of constipation with any medicine should be combined with a healthy lifestyle and diet.

2. What you need to know before you take PEGZOR

Do not take PEGZOR:

  • If you are allergic to Polyethylene Glycol or any of the other ingredients
  • If you have severe bowel disease such as:
    • Inflammatory bowel disease (e.g., ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease)
    • Toxic megacolon
  • If you have:
    • Intestinal perforation or risk of perforation
    • Intestinal obstruction (ileus) or suspected obstruction
    • Painful abdominal condition of unknown cause

Warnings and precautions
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking PEGZOR if:

  • You have liver or kidney problems
  • You are elderly or taking diuretics (water tablets)
  • You experience persistent abdominal pain

Do not take this medicine for long periods without medical advice. Consult a doctor if symptoms persist for more than 2 weeks.

Allergic reactions such as rash, swelling, or breathing difficulty may occur. Stop taking the medicine and seek medical help immediately if this happens.

Other medicines and PEGZOR
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines.

PEGZOR may reduce the absorption of other medicines, especially those with a narrow therapeutic index (e.g., antiepileptics, digoxin, immunosuppressants).

Pregnancy and breast-feeding
PEGZOR can be used during pregnancy and breast-feeding, as its absorption in the body is negligible.

Driving and using machines
PEGZOR has no effect on the ability to drive or use machines.

3. How to take PEGZOR

Always take this medicine exactly as described or as advised by your doctor or pharmacist.

Adults:

  • 25 to 50 mL (10 mg to 20 mg) per day
  • Preferably taken as a single dose in the morning
  • Drink adequate fluids after taking the dose

Children:
Constipation:

  • 0.5 g per kg body weight per day

Faecal disimpaction:

  • 1.5 g per kg body weight per day for 6 days or until resolution
  • Preferably taken as a single dose in the morning
  • Ensure adequate fluid intake

Treatment in children should not exceed 3 months.

Additional advice:

  • PEGZOR works within 24–48 hours
  • Maintain bowel regularity with diet and lifestyle changes

If you take more PEGZOR than you should
You may experience diarrhoea, abdominal pain, or vomiting.
These effects usually resolve after stopping or reducing the dose.

If you forget to take PEGZOR
Take the next dose as soon as you remember.
Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed dose.

4. Possible side effects

Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.

Serious side effects
Stop taking PEGZOR and contact your doctor immediately if you experience:

  • Allergic reactions (rash, swelling, breathing difficulty, fainting)

Other side effects
In adults:
Common (up to 1 in 10 people):

  • Abdominal pain
  • Diarrhoea
  • Nausea

Uncommon (up to 1 in 100 people):

  • Vomiting
  • Urgency to defecate
  • Faecal incontinence

Not known:

  • Electrolyte imbalance (e.g., low sodium or potassium)
  • Dehydration
  • Skin redness

In children:
Common:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Diarrhoea

Uncommon:

  • Vomiting
  • Bloating
  • Nausea

Not known:

  • Allergic reactions

5. How to store PEGZOR

  • Keep out of the sight and reach of children
  • Do not store above 25°C
  • Store protected from moisture
  • Do not use after the expiry date stated on the carton
